Get your bait ready, fishing season is upon us!
THE freshwater scene has been lively. Basshave been enjoying the summer sun andare feeding a lot more aggressively, whilecarp are increasing in number, althoughsmaller in size.
All the dams are fishing well and therivers are not far behind. Go out and enjoythe sun.
The bass are wild! This is a statementthat has resonated in the shop over thelast few weeks.
The watermelon red Kingfisher Reactionsoft plastics have been working very wellin all of the KZN dams. Midmar has beenproducing some very good fish.
Weightless flukes and stick baits haveproduced the majority of the bigger fish.Watermelon red and green pumpkin havebeen the standout colours.
Albert Falls and Inanda have been muchof a muchness when it comes to fish. They are both fishing very well and fewpeople are leaving without a story of a giant or a smile.
Soft plastics have been fishing very well. This is probably due to the slower pacethat people are fishing these and themore realistic nature of these baits.
The trout fishing is starting to wane. The summer insect hatches are makingthe early evenings a dry fly fisherman’sdream. Watching trout sip insects off thesurface while the sun is setting in the distancebrings a smile to some and goosebumpsto others.
Keep a good selection of dry flies atthe ready for such an occasion.
You don’t need every conceivable patternbut just a variety of colours and sizesin known patterns. Spinner-type dries andelk-hair caddis imitations are my go-toflies. If you want to have a good show, tieon a frog fly and strip it along the weedmargins ... hold on for some amazing action.
Sub-surface fishing has slowed a bit, but the takes have been savage. The scalieshave been feeding well and most ofthe usual spots have been holding fish.
Black nymphs and caddis imitationshave been producing good results.
The carp fishing is heating up. Thenumbers have been much larger than overthe previous weeks, albeit the size dropping. The Spiderman dip has been producingsome fantastic results over the lastfew weeks, so well in fact all the storesare sold out of stock.
The Kingfisher will be receiving newstock shortly. If you are planning a trip tothe KZN dams, take some aniseed, bananaand garlic with you. These are the bigthree when it comes to carping in KZN(and most of SA). If the carp are notfeeding on one or a mixture of the three, sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery.
The specimen guys have been landingsome beautiful fish out of Inanda.
The rock and surf side of things has been in the full summer swing. There hasbeen some amazing summer action fromSplash Rocks all the way to Kosi Bay.
The sharks and skates have been bendingthe rods and testing the drags ofmany guys along the coast. The north hascontinued to be on form. There have beenplenty of trophy fish caught in this regionover the past few weeks.
There have been sandies over the magic100 kg and many more close to it. Theseare once-in-a-lifetime fish, so if you areever lucky enough to catch one of thesebeauties, make sure to take care of it andsnap some quick pics before letting him/ her go safely.
Mackerel baits have maintained theirdominance as the best bait for these fish.If you are unsure of what to throw in tothe sea, a mackerel head with some cutletswrapped on the outside will not berefused by a hungry inedible.
