Claren­don res­i­dents de­cide to fix pot­holes after City fails to act

AFTER­months­of­hav­ing­to­face­crater­like­pot­holes­with­no­res­o­lu­tion­in­sight,a­fed-up­Claren­don­com­mu­nity,­in­col­lab­o­ra­tionwith­ SealCoat,­ took­ to­ thestreets­to­fix­the­pot­holes­them­selves.

After­work­ing­from­7­am­un­til­2­pmin­the­scorch­ing­sun­yes­ter­day,­the­res­i­dents­are­“very­happy”­that­the­roads­ are­ smooth­ once­ again.

Rowan­White,­of­the­Claren­don­Com­mu­nity­As­so­ci­a­tion,­said­the­de­ci­sion­tofix­ the­ pot­holes­ came­ after­ it­ be­came“abun­dantly­ev­i­dent­that­the­mu­nic­i­pal­ity­is­ei­ther­in­ca­pable­or­not­in­ter­este­din­at­tend­ing­to­our­de­te­ri­o­rat­ing­road­sand­re­quests­to­re­pair­our­pot­holes”.

“We­de­cided­to­stop­com­plain­ing­an­dopted­to­fix­the­prob­lem­our­selves,”­saidWhite.

He­said­re­quests­for­do­na­tions­were­made­through­their­com­mu­nity­Whats-App­ group.

“The­re­sponse­from­the­com­mu­ni­ty­was­ in­cred­i­ble,”­ said­ White.

He­said­a­man­who­works­for­SealCoat­ and­who­is­a­mem­ber­of­the­com­mu­ni­tyun­der­took­ to­ fix­ the­ pot­holes­ with­ ateam­ of­ three­ other­ peo­ple.

“It­feels­like­it­was­through­sheer­luck­that­he­vol­un­teered,”­said­White.

Claren­don­res­i­dent­Pam­Reach­saidthe­four­men­had­fixed­all­the­pot­holesin­Fettes­and­Kitch­ener­roads­yes­ter­day.

“All­ the­ com­mu­nity­ mem­bers­ were­ very­ sup­port­ive­ and­ were­ out­ an­daround­ to­ hand­ out­ cold­ drinks­ and­food,”­ said­ Reach.

“We­also­just­wanted­to­show­our­sup­port­and­grat­i­tude.­Ev­ery­one­is­very­happy.­We­are­quite­a­mo­ti­vated­com­mu­nity.

“If­we­had­not­taken­the­ini­tia­tive,­Ido­ not­ think­ the­ pot­holes­ would­ have­been­fixed­for­a­long­time.”
