La Stalla (“the stable”) is Chef James Diack’s fourth Jo’burg eatery – his other restaurants are Coobs in Parkhurst and The National and Il Contadino in Parktown North. This farm-to-table eatery in Melville is like a mini Il Contadino and 100% sustainable. Almost all the ingredients are from James’s organic family farm, Brightside, in Magaliesburg. Ingredients such as the flour for the pizza, which is from Champagne Valley, are carefully sourced. James and his Head Chef, Rausharn Griffin, always drive out to visit farms if they’re sourcing produce. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the menu focuses on rustic food inspired by the Spanish, French and Italian countryside – pastas, pizzas, charcuterie boards, salads and wood-fired dishes. The hearty breakfasts are excellent and inexpensive, at R75 each. Try the pumpkin pancakes with burnt sage butter, ricotta, honey and wild boar bacon, or the artisanal bread with mozzarella, pork sausage, spinach and napolitana. Tel: 010 900 4876.
