La Stalla (“the sta­ble”) is Chef James Di­ack’s fourth Jo’burg eatery – his other restau­rants are Coobs in Parkhurst and The Na­tional and Il Con­tadino in Park­town North. This farm-to-ta­ble eatery in Melville is like a mini Il Con­tadino and 100% sus­tain­able. Al­most all the in­gre­di­ents are from James’s or­ganic fam­ily farm, Bright­side, in Ma­galies­burg. In­gre­di­ents such as the flour for the pizza, which is from Cham­pagne Val­ley, are care­fully sourced. James and his Head Chef, Rausharn Grif­fin, al­ways drive out to visit farms if they’re sourc­ing pro­duce. Serv­ing break­fast, lunch and din­ner, the menu fo­cuses on rus­tic food in­spired by the Span­ish, French and Ital­ian coun­try­side – pas­tas, piz­zas, char­cu­terie boards, sal­ads and wood-fired dishes. The hearty break­fasts are ex­cel­lent and in­ex­pen­sive, at R75 each. Try the pump­kin pan­cakes with burnt sage but­ter, ri­cotta, honey and wild boar ba­con, or the ar­ti­sanal bread with moz­zarella, pork sausage, spinach and napoli­tana. Tel: 010 900 4876.
