“I’ve kept my hair natural all my life. I don’t know what it feels like to have relaxed or straightened hair. This time around, I craved change and I wanted to do something drastic that would transform my look, but without relaxing my hair.
“I feel really good with this wig. I’m sexy and fierce! It’ll take a while to get used to my new look, but I’m excited. I must also get used to all the attention that I’ve shied away from all my life. Back in high school, I wore the boys’ uniform so I could avoid attention. So, looking this feminine feels like a rebirth. The make-up is also on point.”
REFILOE LEGOALE AGE: 24
“I’m always at a loss about what to do with my afro, so I play it safe by sticking to braids or cornrows. But I was starting to feel bored with the same old look and thought a makeover could give me a different and edgier look. I love the transformation! Rocking such a daring, colourful style scared me at first, but now I love it! The bouncy curls and overall look complement my face and complexion.”
BONOLO MODISE AGE: 21
“As a final-year student, I realised that I needed to start preparing myself for the work environment. When stepping into a professional space, you have to uphold a certain image that’s appropriate for the office. I thought it’d be a great idea to start practising how to look smart. I wanted a look that says: ‘I’m young and elegant.’ When neglected, dreadlocks can be untidy, so I thought that a makeover would be a great start.
“This is a look I would never have thought of going for because I didn’t know I could pull it off. It’s neat, yet stylish. To my surprise, the earrings and the new hairstyle work great together. I feel elegant but still young and vibrant.
“The casual white top also gives my look sass. I feel more confident and appropriate for a creative work space. It’s nice to see that there’s so much you can do to your hair when you have dreadlocks. I like that I can also rock the look to a ladies’ night or any other social event.
“Change is good. I feel great with this new look.”

“My job is extremely hands-on, so I often go for low-maintenance hairstyles that won’t need any attention during the day. I’d been thinking of trying something different – a style that was equally low maintenance yet still fashionable, but I didn’t know what it would be. I’ve always wanted to try a bob because I see them on lots of celebrities. Luckily for me, that’s exactly what the hair team picked.
“Everything, along with the make-up and clothing, makes me feel like a whole new person. The bob was cut to suit my face and I can wear it with a centre and a side parting. The touch of blue at the ends makes me feel young again. I’m sure my twins won’t even recognise me.
