Star style – Monica Rose
MONICA ROSE, 35, is the woman who styles the world’s famous family, the Kardashians, and is slowly influencing your closet.
Monica Rose is the new name in town. You’ve probably heard of stylist superstar Rachel Zoe, who ruled Hollywood with her A-list celebrity clients. (She has since become a womenswear designer.) But Monica Rose has taken over. With 1.2 million followers on Instagram, the Los Angeles stylist is known for bringing street style to the fashion world. You may have seen a glimpse of her in the reality TV show Keeping up with the Kardashians – she has featured in one or two episodes of almost every season.
On the show, Monica can be spotted hidden in humongous walk-in closets or whenever one of the Kardashians is preparing for a photoshoot. She’s officially the creative force behind the Kardashian name. She’s not a stylist that’s employed only for red carpet events. She’s literally part of their daily life. This genius makes a much bigger impact in shaping the well-known family’s image.
Grounded and not fazed by the fame of those she works for, Monica is the fashion industry’s biggest behindthe-scenes influence. She’s impacted pop culture in America with her legacy being intertwined with the history of the Kardashians’ style.
Her first intervention into the world’s famous family was when she transformed Kim’s style into the body shaping dresses she’s now known for. And when Khloe embarked on a fitness and health regime after her marriage with Lamar Odom imploded, Monica was the woman behind that
metamorphosis. Khloe’s now a different person in terms of style and confidence rather than the black sheep, odd-oneout sister we’ve previously seen on the reality TV show. Monica stepped in and the result? Lots of low-cut tops, clingy dresses and extremely short skirts to show off her toned physique. The stylist has since moved beyond just styling Kim and Khloe to providing each family member with an easily identifiable look.
Kendall and Kylie Jenner are the recent projects who each have millions of young girls emulating their style on a daily basis. When Kendall decided she wanted to model, her sense of style was nowhere near as strong as now. Monica shaped the young Ms Jenner’s model-off-duty aesthetic with crop tops, trench coats and loose trousers.
Monica essentially shaped Kendall’s modelling career by providing her with a look to be taken seriously. Fashion sceptics were silenced. Next, Monica collaborated on some projects with Kylie, including her new Puma ad campaign, again putting that Monica Rose stamp on the deal.
“I’m such a tomboy,” she told Harpersbazaar.com about her dress style . She further explained, “Maybe that’s why I style my clients so sexy – because I live vicariously through them.” For Monica’s default setting, “on the go,” she prefers jeans and a great leather jacket, “I live in my motorcycle jackets. I love my Laer brand one because of the leopard sleeves – it’s all about the details.”
And lastly, when the stylist hits the event scene and the camera is turned on her. “I’m not a dress girl… I always think I’m going to wear one to an event, but I’ll gravitate towards a sexy jumpsuit instead. I just feel good in it,” she revealed to the site.
Beyond the Kardashian clan, Monica’s client list includes the likes of Gigi and Bella Hadid, Chrissy Teigen, Chanel Iman, Keri Hilson, and occasionally Lala Anthony. The creative stylist has also dressed Giuliana Rancic for years when she hosted E! entertainment shows. The dots that connect all these A-listers? They are close friends of the Kardashian clan. Yes, even North West and momanger Kris Jenner are on Monica’s client list.
She was also the force behind Chrissy’s pregnancy style that everyone had their eyes on. Each member of her A-list roster has her own personal style, though Rose’s influence is easy to spot: it’s clingy, 90s-inspired, and often comes in a neutral colour palette.
During another interview, Monica said her trademark characteristic is confidence. She described the common qualities running through her clients as “sexy, chic, and effortless –‘cool girl’ vibes.”
Having such a specific look can be difficult to manage, particularly since her clients overlap both personally and professionally. The challenge is keeping everyone’s individuality intact while dressing each person for her body type and personality. She seems to have nailed it. Describing her style as effortless, essential, and evolving, she has mastered the art of styling high-end fashion with accessible everyday style. Word is Monica Rose is slowly transitioning into a fashion designer and we can’t wait to shop her collections.
