Meet the man behind the smash hit Ska Bhora Moreki, KING MONADA.
People know me as King Monada but my real name is Khutso Steven Kgatle. I grew up in a small village called Mogolubodu in Limpopo. Together with my siblings and cousins, we were raised by my mom, who was the family’s sole breadwinner.
I come from a musical family and was introduced to drums and a bit of guitar at an early age. My uncle taught me everything I know about music.
Papa Penny also inspired my love for the arts and desire to be in the industry. He is very popular in my hometown. I’ve been around for a while, but the song Ska Bhora Moreki carved my mark on the national scene. I’m not new to the industry, I’ve been making music since I was 16 and people in Limpopo know my tunes. The success of Moreki was a surprise way beyond my expectations.
I always try to sing about things that happen in my community or that I experience personally. The song Ska Bhora Moreki is about a friend who takes you out and wants to show you a good time. We may not always have the money to make the night happen, but there’s always that friend – even if it’s you – who has planned the night and naturally you have to go by his mood, his preferences and his rules as he is the ‘sponsor’ – or moreki – behind everything that happens. It’s funny but very true!
I’ve collaborated with the likes of Muungu Africa and Zanda, and have so much more in store for my fans. People shouldn’t see me as a one-dimensional artist; I’m a musician and have lots to showcase. My album Molamo gives listeners a taste of what to expect from King Monada in the future. Watch this space!
