Make Me Over

The TL Glam Squad transformed Nomsa Shongwe into the ‘Glamma’ she’s meant to be

READER: NOMSA SHONGWE

Age: 43

Occupation: Correctional Services Officer Who says children don’t know what’s good for their parents? “I love my mom unconditionally, but her fashion sense is questionable,” says Lydia Shongwe, Nomsa’s daughter. “She’s a newbie in the grandparenting world, and addresses herself as ‘Glamma’ to her newborn grandson. Her style is too sporty and she’s not a fan of make-up, even though she was a beauty queen back in her days. It would be nice for her to rediscover her beauty,” Lydia adds.

MAKE-UP

“When I heard that Nomsa’s not a fan of makeup, I wanted to change her perception, and show her that it doesn’t take away one’s natural beauty, but enhances it instead. I played it very safe because I wanted her to still recognise herself afterwards. I applied light shades of eyeshadow to make her eyes pop, highlighted the cheeks with a pink blush and finished off the look with bold red lips, which made her look very sexy,” says make-up artist Faith Seuoe.

HAIR

Since Nomsa always wears her hair short, the hairstylist figured a braid ponytail would look great on her. Her hair was washed, and hair food applied to her scalp to keep it moisturised. The hairstylist then braided cornrows, and attached a ponytail to make her look chic.

NOMSA’S OVERALL EXPERIENCE

“I felt brand new after the makeover. Having my make-up done by a professional was the highlight of the day. I love my new look, especially the hair. I’m also excited that I learnt new fashion and beauty hacks – simplicity is key,” says a transformed Nomsa.
