411 On Hair Dye

DIY hair colouring is only for those who know exactly what they want

- By TSAKANE NDLOVU

Here are some tips to follow for impeccable results:

PREPARE YOUR HAIR

Make sure your hair is healthy and strong enough for a chemical transformation, to prevent damage like breakage and hair loss.

WASH THOROUGHLY

Before applying the hair colour, use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of product build-up. Follow it up with a deep conditioner to restore moisture on the hair and scalp. If you don't feel confident enough, get someone more experienced to help you with this task.

FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS

Get everything you need before you start. First read and follow the instructions during every step of the process. Do a strand test before you commit to a colour, and start from the roots first. Use two boxes if your hair is longer.

DON’T OVER PROCESS

Use a timer. Stick to the recommended period for maximum results. Rinse off the dye as soon as the time's up.
