QUICK TIPS ON HOW TO LAND A JOB IN THE DIGITAL AGE

-

Access to digital media makes jobseekers’ lives so much easier. Gone are the days of dropping off your CV from door-to-door, or sending it via fax. Your dream job could be just a few clicks away.

Job-hunting online is fast and very convenient. With these advantages, however, comes greater competition and you could be up against hundreds of other applicants for the same job. So how can you ensure that your application stands head-and-shoulders above the rest?

Sibongile Lehloo, director of digital product and marketing at JobStarter, shares a few tips on how to fine-tune your applications:

1. Look online everyday, at least three times a day. It’s not enough to log into reputable job portals once a day or week. Because digital media is fast-paced, you need to check at least three times a day, every day, to make sure you haven’t missed out on a great opportunity. Being among the first jobseekers to apply is key.

2. Have a clear and neatly designed CV. The formatting is of utmost importance. Make sure it’s easy to read, and that your skill set, education and experience are clearly outlined.

3. Clean up your social media profiles. Nowadays, potential employers go online to learn more about their prospective candidates. While it’s okay to post pictures of yourself living your best life, or having strong opinions on pressing social-economic matters, try to stay away from being racist, sexist and simply rude.

4. Get help. Jobstarter is a non-profit company established in 2016. The free mobile platform provides information and guidance to help young entry-level jobseekers navigate the world of work. Find them at www.jobstarter.co.za
