My Travels – Local Getaways

We celebrate Mzansi’s lesser known travel destinations

-

Anda Darling Sanda, 31

The entrepreneur and data analyst has taken her love for the Eastern Cape to another level.

What drew you to Balloch in Barkly East? I had never heard of the place prior to my trip. Also, the cave camp area was under a huge overhang.

What would you go back for? The spectacular and magical mountain scenery, hiking, canoeing, swimming under waterfalls and fly-fishing. Biggest epiphany? That I’m not alone in trying to turn this addiction to seeing the world into a career.

Most surprising fact about the place? You can camp or stay in the cottages, and it’s perfect for 4x4 enthusiasts.

Refilwe Tladi, 32

Founder and CEO of Thalerra Tours Shuttles & Safaris, loves hosting clients and organising tours.

What drew you to Khamkirri in the Northern Cape? I’d been curious to see how the Khoisan lived, and was privileged to be invited to a Sho’t Left trip to experience what the area offers. What would you go back for? The activities were amazing — the Nature Paddle was my highlight.

Biggest epiphany? Waking up at dawn for a watery sunrise over the Orange River outside my hut, and watching sunsets from my patio. That made me realise travel is not about money, but true fulfilment.

Best way to befriend the locals? Wear a smile at all times. There are abundant grape trees, so you best love your wine!

Sbahle Kgobe, 39

A financial controller and blogger on her site, Let’s Get Lost In The World, shares what stole her heart.

What drew you to Gordon’s Bay? It’s a laidback place that provides a tranquil alternative. The Harbour Island reminded me of Eden Island in Seychelles.

What would you go back for? It’s a beautiful place to unwind, has access to the Cape winelands, the beaches aren’t crowded and the people are warm and welcoming.

Biggest epiphany? I learned that life is about the simpler things, rather than the grand.

Favourite food? Grilled kingklip with fondant potatoes.

Anelisa Mazongolo, 31

An attorney, hiker and avid traveller who’s always chasing nature, sunsets and picturesque views.

What drew you to the Mountain Sanctuary in the North West? It boasts moderately challenging trails and the most breathtaking views of the Magalies area.

What would you go back for? To camp overnight during the cooler months because there’s a peaceful camping site. Biggest epiphany? One doesn’t need to break the bank in order to experience our country’s most charming destinations for a short getaway. Some of the most gorgeous sights are right on your doorstep.

Favourite excursion? A picnic and swim in the crystal clear streams between rocks and lush bushes.
