True Love

Style Star – Matte Nolim

Siyethemba Duma, 29, the brains behind the fashion label Matte Nolim, on how far he's come

- By TSAKANE NDLOVU

Why did you choose fashion designing as a career?

It was the only option God gave me [chuckles]. Seriously, it's all I've ever wanted to be as a child. My grandmother was a designer — so, I believe it was a talent passed on to me.

What's your favourite part of being a designer?

The power to create whatever you wish to, and to have everyone else want to own it.

What is fashion, in your opinion?

It's the difference between covering up and showing up — you need clothing to cover up and fashion to show up.

What skills are necessary to make it as a fashion designer?

Education and talent.

How do you stay up-to-date with fashion?

I live on trend forecast websites — they are the best way to stay on top of trends.

Briefly tell us about yourself, and your brand?

My brand Matte Nolim has been in existence for five years now — it's my Sasha Fierce. Personally, I'm different from my brand, but we share the same vision. I'm just a regular 29-year-old with massive dreams.

How would you describe your personal style?

I'm in love with feminine cuts and accessories. I love stocking socks and skinny jeans with a cropped denim jacket and a leopard print shirt.

Of all the projects that you've worked on, which one stands out for you?

Honestly, it would have to be TRUE LOVE's Night Of Style. It was my first

time opening and highlighting an event. After that show, I felt like I'd managed to create a place for myself in the industry.

If you could go back in time and tell yourself one thing before starting your career, what would it be?

You don't have to be in Joburg to make it big.

What was your biggest fear when starting your own line?

I asked myself one question: How am I going to make money in a city where no-one really knows me? But I didn't allow that fear to hold me back. Soon after, I was in business, and created a name for myself.

Who is your favourite designer, and why?

It has to be the one and only Victoria Beckham. I love how she made everyone who thought she was just another celebrity wannabe designer sit up and take notice after season one. That was a boss move! I'll forever look up to her for that.

What do you get up to for fun?

I go home and play with my mom's cheeks [chuckles].

Describe your clothes in three words?

Modern, minimalistic with a touch of drama.

Where do you see Matte Nolim in the next five years?

Finally with a New York address, and having stockists globally. The aim is to sell, sell, sell!

How do you want women to feel when they wear your clothes?

I believe that a woman should always carry a curiosity about her — and not be summed up the moment she walks into a room. I believe that with the Matte Nolim aesthetic, one can achieve this effortlessly — Lupita Nyong'o oozes this in bucket loads. To sum it up clearly, I want every woman to feel like Lupita on the red carpet, with all eyes and attention on them.

Can we expect a men’s clothing line from Matte Nolim?

I get asked this question all the time. I want to say, 'No' but maybe it's time I started making clothes for myself now.

When did you get your big break in the fashion industry, and with which project?

In 2016 at JHB Fashion Week. The reception for that collection led me down the path I'm currently on. That collection made the fashion world take interest in me.

What are you most proud of in your career?

That some of the biggest publications in the world love and respect my work. But, most of all, that the brand is a part of people's lives and that there are girls who are working hard just so they can afford some of my outfits. To think this idea was only in my head a few years ago! Now, I look in the mirror and wonder what else I can do.

What can we expect from you in 2019?

I'm hoping that the Matte Nolim brand will finally make it to the global fashion stages.
