Make Me Over

Mariettah Masemola makes bold style and beauty moves

MARIETTAH MASEMOLA

Age: 35

Occupation: Businesswoman Mariettah is a beauty spa owner who describes her style as very laid-back, but wants to experiment, some more, with all things fashion and beauty. “A makeover will help boost my image, self-confidence, help me fit seamlessly into my industry, boost my business and make my clients take me seriously,” Mariettah says.

MAKE-UP

“I was so impressed with her brows – they were neat and nicely shaped, which made my job easier. I used a brown brow liner so it could blend in and look natural. I played with soft eyeshadow shades because her outfit was very loud, and I didn’t want the colours to clash. I decided to go for a bold red lipstick because it would complement her outfit,” says make-up artist Faith Seoue.

HAIR

“Mariettah has beautiful, soft natural hair, which I loved working with. I used one packet of the Frika Marley braid fibre, and first braided it into three. Then I combed the hair to the back, and did one big cornrow with the hair. I installed the braid from the top middle of the head, twisted it twice and connected it with the line of cornrows, all the way down,” says hairstylist Andiswa Sibisi.

Who is your style icon?

My style icon is personal stylist who goes by the alias ‘Styles By Tumi’ on social media – the woman has swag. What’s your favourite item in your make-up bag?

Oh gosh, I’m obsessed with lipsticks! I have shades from matte to shiny, and from the darkest to the lightest. Pink is my favourite because it makes me look younger. How did you feel after the makeover?

I felt completely different – like a big-shot businesswoman! What did you love the most about your makeover?

I enjoyed dressing up, the make-up, and the “lights, camera, action!” What did you learn?

During my long conversation with the make-up artist, I learnt that self-doubt is dangerous. You can take people’s advice, but in the end, use what you feel will work best for you. Never say something won’t work until you’ve tried it.
