MANE GOALS

Maintain your tresses for longer with these budget-friendly tips

- By PALESA VILAKAZI

WEAVE

Use a silicon serum or spray on your weave to keep it silky, shiny, and tangle free. Maintain its health by treating it like your own hair. Natural oils, deep treatment and crèmes are the best ways to keep it from becoming dry or brittle. Brush twice a day, starting at the tips. When brushing, hold the hair in the middle. Gently and slowly brush out the tangles at the ends, working your way to the top of your head. Vigorous brushing will make your hair shed.

DREADLOCKS

Use a scalp and hair cleanser inbetween washes, or rub in some tea tree oil to prevent bacteria or fungus from growing on the scalp. When pulled too tightly, dreadlocks move the hairline back over time, so apply hair fertiliser or nourisher daily to strengthen the hairline. Treat your mane and scalp with a protein conditioner before each twist session for added strength. We all like the fresh look of a retwist, but if done too often, it can lead to breakage and thinning at the root.

RELAXED

Consistency and moisture is the name of the game for our queens with relaxed hair. Relaxers dry out hair, so a good shampoo and conditioner once a week will help nourish your strands. Wear a silk cap and apply a leave-in serum to the ends to keep them conditioned while sleeping.

NATURAL

To keep your ’fro in tip-top shape like our very own Miss Universe, Zozibini Tunzi, use a hydrating shampoo on your tresses at least once a week. Moisturise it daily with products containing coconut, olive, castor or jojoba oils. Use a detangling comb to remove knots before washing or conditioning your hair.
