Wig Therapy

Achieve style, versatility, and longevity, with these savvy tips

- By PALESA VILAKAZI

With proper care, wigs can last a year or more when worn daily. From frontals, full-lace wigs to synthetic units, here’s how you can make sure you get your money’s worth.

WIG CARE 101

Wash your wig with shampoo once every two weeks, using cold or lukewarm water. Apply a small drop of high-quality mild shampoo to the wet hair. Comb the shampoo through the hair from top to bottom using gentle, downward strokes, one section at a time. Do not rub the hair or scalp as you would with your own. Instead, gently blot the hair with a towel.

While the hair is still wet, spread a small amount of wig conditioner and leave it in the hair for 3-5 minutes. Then, very gently, detangle the wig, starting at the tips of the hair and working your way up.

Do not dry your wig with a blow dryer, as it can dry out and damage the hair. Allow the wig to air-dry.

Don’t comb the hair immediately after you’ve washed it, only once the hair is dry. Use a special wide brush and start from the ends to the top, to prevent the wig’s hair from shedding. If you have a wig with curly hair, then a comb should not be used frequently. Use your hand to make it orderly after each wearing.

PROTECTING & STYLING YOUR WIG

Apply a heat protectant spray each time before styling your wig. This will protect your wig against the heat of hairdryers, stylers and tongs while leaving the hair with a ‘no product’ feel. Spray from the roots to the tips and comb through to ensure the product is distributed evenly, before using your hairdryer or styler.

Don’t wear your hairpiece while sleeping, this may result in hair loss, breakage and matting. Store your wig on a stand or mannequin to prevent the wig cap from stretching.

To restyle your wig, you may use a blow dryer, curling iron or flat iron on low heat settings only, or use electric rollers on a medium setting. Do not use a flat-iron or curler too often, it will cause your wig to lose its gloss, making it dry and easy to break.

The key to a flawless installation is maintaining perfectly-manicured edges. After installing your wig, apply an edge tamer to create a smooth hairline that blends with your wig.
