True Love

Ed’s Letter

Exactly two and a half years ago, I embarked on what was to be a life-changing journey. I had worked in the media space for 15 years – 13 of them as an editor on various of our mainstream brands. During this time, I had also clinched the post of Head of Content for an international social media app. So, 15 years on, I decided that enough was enough: I was going to be a stayat-home mommy and wife, and maybe look after our family’s business ventures as well.

The baby project had been a long time coming, so my now two-year-old girl came as a wonderful gift. She’s the hardest job I’ve ever been tasked with, but is a daily delight to have and hold. We are truly blessed.

Then the unexpected happened: In spite of being a happily “kept wife”, I became increasingly depressed and dissatisfied with my life. I couldn’t understand it. Here I was, with literally everything I’ve ever wished for, but I felt devastated every day. Then, almost out of the blue, an old media friend asked me to help her with the launch of a project she was working on for television. The fee was really a symbolic gesture, but I’ll never forget my first meeting with the TV channel. I felt alive for the first time in months! This was what I had been missing: I’d been missing my true self. Fast forward a few months later, and I got an email offering me the coveted position of Editor of TRUE LOVE magazine. And now we’re here!

I’m telling you all this as a way of introducing myself to my new TRUE LOVE family and reintroducing myself to my old friends, who have followed my career and work over the years. It is good to be back and to reconnect. Thank you for all the welcome back messages and notes.

We kick off our new journey with none other than my all-time superstar, Somizi Mhlongo-Motaung, and his gorgeous husband, Mohale. I’ve known Somizi for many years and he’s always a hoot to be around. He can also be serious, spiritual and introspective when the occasion calls for it. In addition, he is authentic and true to himself and others, and will be the first one to say sorry when he realises he has wronged you. For me, he is the most perfectly imperfect man. I’m truly happy that he has found a home in Mohale’s heart – a man who may be young in age, but is wise and thoughtful. They’re both blessed to have each other. Our cover, cover story and the theme of this issue capture my vision for this iconic magazine. We’re done being overlooked and we’re done overlooking each other. We’re the ones we’ve been waiting for. In the winning words of Miss Universe, our very own Zozi Thunzi: “We should be teaching young girls to take up space. Nothing is as important as taking up space.”

I dare you to find your space and take it up. Let’s go!

This cover and cover story, and issue theme captures my vision for this iconic magazine. We’re done being over looked and overlooking each other
