Let’s Talk Microneedling

- By GRACE MANTJIU

Innovative skin solutions are introduced all the time to slow down the process of aging. However, it’s easy to get confused as to whether these treatments really work, or if they are suitable for your skin type. Microneedling is one of them, and although it sounds very intimidating, it is actually a minimally invasive procedure. Here is all you need to know about it

WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?

Microneedling is a collagen-induction therapy used to help stimulate collagen production through a bunch of fine, short needles to puncture the top layer of the skin. What is collagen? Collagen is a very important protein that helps keep the skin smooth and youthful with a firm texture. Microneedling is mostly used on the face and décolletage, but it can be done anywhere on your body. The treatment is designed to promote skin rejuvenation, which improves the appearance of acne, fine lines, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation and hair loss.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

With every treatment, starting on a clean slate is key. Microneedling begins with cleansing your face, followed by the application of a numbing cream. In addition, a serum targeting skin repair or healing is applied, penetrating the skin more deeply and therefore treating the area. A dermapen with multiple micro needles that pierce the skin is used all over your face, creating “controlled damage” on the surface of the skin. The concept of skin needling is based on the skin’s ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical damage such as cuts, abrasions, and other physical trauma. The procedure is normally completed within 20 minutes for the entire face.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

The side effects are rare if the procedure is done correctly by a professional. Skin irritation is mostly the primary problem. However there are other side-effects that you might experience such as redness, bruising or itchiness. If done too deeply, some people might even experience flaking of the skin.

IS IT SUITABLE FOR ALL SKIN TYPES?

It is safe to do on all types of skin, including dark skin tones. Dark skin has more active cells that produce melanin, and therefore it’s important to have a qualified therapist perform the procedure to avoid any problems.

HOW MANY TIMES SHOULD YOU HAVE THE TREATMENT?

If your skin concerns are not severe, then you can have a treatment done every three months. If you are dealing with acne scarring, a treatment every four weeks for a period of six months is recommended.

HOW SOON CAN YOU SEE THE RESULTS?

Do not book a hot date or girls’ night out on the day of your treatment. You will have a tailor-made mask on after the treatment, so you can’t touch your face for the rest of the day. After a week, your skin will feel more hydrated, with visibly refined pores and reduced fine lines.

AFTERCARE

The treatment leaves your skin red and sensitive, so a treatment balm is applied to calm it. It is important to keep your skin hydrated, to avoid the sun, and to also ensure that you use sunscreen with at least 30 SPF. Avoid steam rooms, heavy exercise, and products that contain strong ingredients such as retinol and glycolic acid.

WHERE CAN YOU GET IT DONE AND HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Do your research in advance to make sure you find a licensed practitioner, and check for accredited aesthetic institutions. Thorough consultation should be done before the treatment, and hygiene protocols should be followed. Treatment costs from R1900 per session, depending on the aesthetic clinic chosen for the procedure.
