When Ronald (Thabo Malema) gets the paternity test results on Wednesday 2 December for the child that his wife Hlengiwe (Fikile Mthwalo) is carrying, everyone’s anxious about who the father is. While Hlengiwe is hoping that it’s her hubby, she can’t ignore the fact that it may be his younger brother Lucky (Mpho Sibeko).

How does Hlengiwe feel about the prospect of her brother-in-law being the father of her child? Hlengiwe is terrified. She’s already ashamed that she went that far with Lucky. It’s an act she didn’t know was within her to do. She’s also afraid of what Ronald might say… or do. She loves him but made a terrible mistake because she was vulnerable and confused. She’d like for that to be an excuse but knows it’s not good enough. Does Ronald’s treatment of Lucky affect her in any way? Hlengiwe is a sympathetic woman. She’s very motherly and tends to want to nurture. Lucky’s the black sheep of the family and her care for him was established early in the story. When Ronald mistreats him, Hlengiwe’s protective instinct kicks in and she fights for Lucky in spite of herself. What’s her mood leading up to the paternity test result being revealed? Anxious and in denial. She wants the world to swallow her. She’s also pushing Lucky away and is very much in denial about the whole thing. She’s playing the victim with Ronald and in some ways forgets to acknowledge her part in the mess. Ronald becomes the villain for wanting to know for sure if the baby is his. Despite her begging, Ronald is relentless. She becomes increasingly desperate and resents her husband for forcing her into the test. Who is she hoping is the father? Ronald, of course! She loves him. She just made a very big mistake. What will she do if it turns out to be Lucky’s – have they discussed that? Hlengiwe isn’t in a position to be planning for any kind of contingency at the moment. Life is happening for her; she isn’t living her life and she has no control over what’s going on. She’s in denial and the last thing that she’s thinking about is what happens if it is Lucky’s child. Big Boy fears that it’s over between him and Nandipha, while back home, Lucky is adamant that he can make it on his own but Ronald won’t stop tormenting him. Ruth encourages Lucky to do right by his brother and Lucky finds out that living on his own isn’t child’s play. Happiness drops a bombshell on Nandipha, and Nandipha then decides to do things on her own. Happiness’s fate is almost sealed, and Nandipha has to face Gideon. Israel makes a discovery that could throw the family into disarray, even though Ruth is impressed with Israel and his effect on the children. Gideon grills Nandipha, wanting the truth, and the Gumede family get an unexpected visitor and secrets are revealed. Big Boy barges into the tavern and is heartbroken by what he sees. May and Ruth argue about Israel, while Ronald gets the paternity results and gloats to Lucky. Big Boy’s in trouble with the law and mine, and Mandla faces the miners and they make fun of him. Nandipha’s secret slips out, but what will Gideon do? Big Boy realises that he must do the unthinkable in order to save Nandipha as the Gumedes receive what they have been waiting for. Gideon then learns information that he wishes he never knew. NB! See more on p24
