Grey’s Anatomy

-

Sarah Drew shares a couple of similarities with her character Dr April Kepner on Grey’s Anatomy (2005-current), such as her religious views. Says Sarah, “I was really happy to play this role because I believe I have a space to tell a more authentic story about a Christian.”

While Sarah, who started her career on stage, plays a doctor, her mom Dr Jeannie Drew is an actual physician and taught biology at a private girls high school in New York. The 35-year-old’s dad Reverend Charles Drew has a big influence on Sarah’s religious views and helped the Grey’s Anatomy writing team prepare for a few scenes. “They called and talked to my dad [about April’s premarital counselling] and specific things that he said to them wound up in the script. It was so cool,” says Sarah. Just like her character, Sarah waited until marriage to have sex. She married Professor Peter Lanfer in 2002 and they have two kids, four-year-old son Micah Emmanuel and one-year-old daughter Hannah Mali Rose. The natural redhead hates wearing make-up and prefers a natural look, which is why Grey’s Anatomy is right up her alley. “I literally didn’t own a hairdryer or make-up that wasn’t specifically for the stage until I got married. I was such a tomboy,” she laughs. In 2014, Sarah played Allyson in the comedy movie Mom’s Night Out. But unlike Allyson, Sarah has a dedicated night out with her girlfriends every Wednesday, while her hubby has his guys’ night on Thursdays. She’s very close to her second cousin, Gotham (2014-current) star Ben McKenzie – he plays Jim Gordon.
