Season 1 SABC3 (*193) 20:30 Lifestyle

Lifestyle series Tyres & Braaiers (2017current) is taking viewers on a braaivleis roadtrip around Mzansi and driving the show (literally) are comedian Nik Rabinowitz and chef Hezron Louw. The pair hop in interesting cars and travel the land to basically braai and have a good time – tvplus caught up with them in the middle of such a pitstop…

What’s your first braai memory?

Hezron: a Mozambique beach with calamari and prawns and green salad when I was about five. For some reason, the salad sticks with me [Laughs]. Nik: My godfather loved braaiing fish on the rocks in front of his seaside bungalow. My godfather was like the Jewish Tolla van der Merwe and my early comedy education basically took place around his fire.

You both obviously share a love for cars… Hezron: Oh yes! Have you seen a 1967 Malibu Chevelle with a V8 engine? A beautiful beast with raw power! Nik: Kombi legend Paul Cochrane has a 1975 VW Kombi that he modified into a firetruck with a wood ladder! It’s crazy!

What braai stands out as the most interesting you’ve been to on Tyres & Braaiers? Hezron: the crocodile spit [episode 5, 3 May] – an entire croc! And they still did a 3kg “T-Rex T-Bone”. It was primal! Nik: the smiley (sheep head) braai in the Agter Pakhuis mountains [episode 6, 10 May], around the corner from where I spent my childhood holidays. Sheep’s brains on toast – now there’s an unforgettable braai broedjie combo.

And which braai spot had the most memorable vibe this season? Nik: Andile and Sphelelo’s Soweto Car Wash Tshisanyama [episode 4, tonight] that ended with wheel spinners disapearing in a cloud of smoke.
