Athletes Jade and Eshe (Gaosi Raditholo and Swankie Mafoko) are determined to make their relationship work. But from Monday 29 May, they face their hardest test to date – and it’s not the icycold stares and snubs from the other athletes at the ASA gym – it’s an injury that could end Eshe’s sport career before it even gets out the blocks.

“Eshe started incorporating gymnastics into her workouts at the gym and she was doing really well,” says Swankie. “But then she injured herself on Monday 22 May and had to see a doctor.” Eshe’s doc administers an injection on Monday 29 May to help her with the injury and tells her that it contains a substance that’s banned by the Athletics Board, so she can’t compete in any competitions. “But it will help with the pain,” says Swankie, “And that’s the important thing.”

Jade love Eshe and thinks that she’s looking out for her later that Monday when she chats to ASA boss Justice (Saint Seseli). “Jade tells Justice about Eshe’s injury, but Eshe sees this as a betrayal after Justice stops her from competing in a gymnastics contest.” Eshe’s rage gets the better of her and she walks out on Justice and her relationship with Jade. “There’s a crack in her relationship at this point and she and Jade start falling apart.”

Botho (Moliehli Makobane), who has been coaching Eshe, is surprised that Eshe’s left the gym. She tries to talk Eshe into reconsidering on Tuesday 30 May but Swankie adds that “Eshe is stubborn and doesn’t forgive easily”. Meanwhile, Jade’s doing research on Eshe’s injury on Tuesday 6 June and finds an experimental surgery that could save Eshe’s career. But there’s another problem besides the cost. “The surgery is experimental. It could go one way and be successful, or the other and leave her paralysed forever,” explains Swankie.

Jade only wants the best for Eshe – and hopes that they’ll be able to fix their relationship – but she’s not sure if she should tell Eshe about the surgery. “She goes to Botho for advice on Tuesday 6 June in the hope that she’ll know what to do,” explains Swankie. It’s one thing giving Eshe advice, but it’s a whole other thing getting her to listen.
