Drained in drama
Sphe strengthens her bond with gangster Gadaffi when her baby daughter goes missing.

After 20 years of bowing to her family, Sphe (Pearl Monama) is putting herself first. She packs her bags and flees town on Wednesday 25 October with her gangster buddy Gadaffi (Vuyo Dabula). “She wants to forget about her divorce [from her controlling husband Mazwi, played by Musa Ngema],” says Pearl. “It’s like she is alive again! Spending time with Gadaffi is an escape from her issues.” The unlikely pair bonded while they were stuck in a lift earlier this month and she had the courage to open up and tell him that Mazwi isn’t the biological father of her daughter Rorisang (Lethokuhle Jiyane). “Unlike his daily illegal dealings, Gadaffi is a different guy around Sphe. They have fun together and it’s exactly what she needs: a time out,” adds Pearl.
ON THE LOOSE
But tragedy follows joy like a shadow and Sphe’s world crashes later on Wednesday 25 October. “Rori goes missing! Although Sphe is terrified, she tries to keep a straight face,” says Pearl. “With all the drama that her family are going through, with her dad Jack (Vusi Kunene) fighting for his life in hospital, she tries to stay strong to avoid falling into a depression like she did in September. But carrying the weight of the world is enough to push anyone over the edge and she breaks down in Gadaffi’s arms on Monday 30 October. “He is the only one she can trust and offload her problems to. He listens to her attentively and that makes her feel like she has everything under control,” says the actress.
ONE MAN WOMAN
Vulnerable and anxious about Rori’s safety, Sphe kisses Gadaffi on Wednesday 1 November. “She runs out of the room in embarrassment,” laughs Pearl, but Gadaffi wants answers. Despite her tough exterior, she’s let him see a side that she keeps hidden. Sphe realises that this “thing” with Gadaffi can’t go any further and Pearl says that “sure, they have a vibe but she is still married. Her daughter is nowhere to be found – her life needs fixing before she adds a complicated romance to it.” She puts him in the friendzone on Thursday 2 November, but the old Gadaffi might not appreciate that…
