Man of the house

Unlucky-in-love Lebo is laughably in over his head with women in local comedy Gauteng Maboneng.

Gauteng Maboneng Season 3 Sundays (from 11 November) SABC2 (*192) 20:30

Aspiring musician Lebo (played by real-life muso Goodwill Dr Malinga) is just trying to get by in modern- day South Africa. But that’s a lot harder he expected in returning sitcom Gauteng Maboneng (2011- current) after his uncle’s passing. “The women in his life are driving him crazy,” says the 38-yearold with exasperation. “I think that he is like every father and husband, he will do anything for his family’s well-being.” First though, he needs to rein in his troublemaker niece Sisi (Palesa Ntshihlele), as well as his uncle’s golddigging widow Pearl (Noxee Maqashalala) who spends money that Lebo doesn’t have. And then there’s his granny Koko (Linda Sobezo), who throws epic temper tantrums. “But as much as they drive him up the wall, he loves them and will do anything for them, including putting his career on pause,” adds the actor.

TAKING CHARGE

Something he doesn’t want to put on ice though is his love life, although it’s not that simple for him, adds Goodwill. “Lebo might be warm and jovial all the time, but the idea of falling in love is terrifying to him.” He’s had a crush on Sisi’s tutor Thami (Chumisa Cosa) from season 2 but he still hasn’t said anything to her. “Luckily the feeling is mutual and she makes the first move this season,” reveals Goodwill. “But you know what? She is going to add to his women woes with more stress!”

READY & ABLE

Despite this being his second season, Goodwill still isn’t sure how he ended up on the sitcom because it was never on his radar. “I was discussing my music with director and actor Sisanda Henna during a meeting and he convinced me to audition for the role after Mahlubi Kraai left the production when season 1 had aired. It’s a lot of fun with my co-stars and they have helped me polish up my acting skills. I’m looking forward to this season and seeing how our audiences respond because we had a great time on set.”
