When it comes to zombies, gore-fest The Walking Dead (2010- current) is at the front of the mumbling, shuffling undead pack. And while the series is nine seasons in, new showrunner and executive producer Angela Kang says that “there is so much more to come. What we have seen before with The Walkers and the survivor group is nothing compared to things that are on the way”.
How aware are you that the show is nearing its end? We’re consciously and unconsciously aware of it. We don’t sit thinking, “Wow, we could have just one season left.” But at the same time, people are ageing, we see that on a daily basis and so it is at the back of our minds. Judith (Chloe Garcia-Frizzi) was born on the show, so how far into this apocalypse event are we? That is something that reminds us how far along the story is. Judith is probably about five in the current season, so Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the others have been out in this world of terror for about five or six years. Speaking of Rick, what was the reaction when Andrew told the team that it was time for him to leave? He wanted to go back to his family in the UK, Andrew that is. He is such a wonderful leader, as is Rick. Him dying had to be organic, and with Andy’s input, I think that we have tied up his journey fittingly. And what has changed with The Walkers? After six years, they are pretty rotten and disgusting. We age them more for every season and there will be more flesh falling off and hanging off. Our special effects team do an incredible job. It is disgusting but so good!
