The Big Bang Theory

Kevin Sussman doesn’t mind that his character Stuart is the least cool of The Big Bang Theory (2007- current) characters because he has one superpower that no one else has: “He runs a comic book store – he’s basically a god and has access to comics and collectibles that Sheldon and Leonard (Jim Parsons and Johnny Galecki) wish they could get. So he’s got that going for him,” says the 47-year-old Kevin who was in SA in September for the ComicCon Africa entertainment event.
Unlike his co-stars, Kevin has per1 sonal experience to use for his job: he worked in a New York comic book store before moving to LA in 2006. Kevin swapped coasts after being 2 cast as Walter, Betty’s (America Ferrera) geeky boyfriend in comedy series Ugly Betty (2006-2010) but he was fired after season 1 because the character wasn’t working. He hates swimming and admits 3 that Big Bang’s hottub scene was terrifying: “I needed someone to hold my hand for the first attempt. I could only do one take – it was horrifying!” Kevin’s love-life is almost as bad 4 as Stuart’s: he separated from his wife of six years Alessandra Young in 2012 and only got a divorce in 2018. He learnt his lesson with improv 5 on the show the hard way, trying to convince series creator Chuck Lorre about a line. Kevin says that “he looked at me, said ‘no’ and walked off. I stick to the script religiously now”.
