In two minds

Sphe is in a difficult position: rekindle her troubled marriage with volatile Mazwi or choose his caring brother Smanga.

Mazwi (Musa Ngema) has been in a bullish mood for the last week after returning to town and he makes his demand clear on Wednesday 5 December: his wife Sphe (Pearl Monama). “After much consideration, he is ready to forgive Sphe for having a baby with his brother Smanga (Moopi Mothibeli) – it was forced by the elders after all.” That’s going to be a lot of hard work for the businessman because Smanga is blocking his path yet again, explains Pearl. “When Mazwi walked out on his wife and ‘ their’ child Rorisang (Dithoriso Mosaka) in August, he didn’t want to speak to her. He even warned her not to contact him. He wanted to get on with his life in his way and with no links to his betrayers.” But while Mazwi was away, Sphe grew closer to Smanga after he took a bigger interest in his daughter. “Sphe is conflicted with this new situation. She has a bond with Smanga but Mazwi is still her husband, which makes this decision all the more harder. This is something that she will need to think about and someone will be hurt,” adds Pearl.

OFF THE TRACK

Why the sudden change for Mazwi? “He has realised that his wife was the victim,” says Musa. “He couldn’t look her in the eye for that affair but since she had no choice [Mazwi’s infertility forced the elders to demand an heir the only other way possible], it isn’t fair for him to treat her like this.” He plants a surprise kiss on Sphe’s lips on Wednesday 5 December, with Musa adding that it’s part of Mazwi’s plan: “He wants to pull out all the stops to win Sphe back and thinks that a kiss will do. And it might have if Sphe wasn’t thinking about Smanga…”

Smanga ticked all the boxes while his brother was away, switching from Uncle Smanga to Daddy Smanga overnight to help care for Rorisang, who has had a number of medical setbacks including being diagnosed with cerebral palsy in early November. “Unlike Mazwi, Smanga put Sphe and Rori’s interests ahead of his. He babysits her when Sphe is out with her friends and his attachment to Rori is solid,” says Pearl. “Sphe couldn’t wait for Mazwi to make up his mind while he was out of town. Sphe moved on with her life and her heart is with Smanga.”

SURPRISE SURPRISE

No one is more shocked by Sphe’s brother decision on Monday 10 December than Sphe herself. “Smanga is devastated that she has chosen Mazwi over him after everything that he’s done, but he doesn’t speak to her about it,” says Pearl, who adds that her character opted for her husband because they’ve been together longer and he knows her inside out. “She knows what makes him tick and what makes him happy. More than anything, she believes that she owes Mazwi for lying to him about Rori’s paternity.”

Mazwi for his part has also tried to improve himself, which Pearl says that Sphe can see for herself when she visits him at his new place in Alex, as well as how he is treating Rorisang – like she is his daughter. “This is how it was meant to be for them when they got married in 2016 even though it was a business marriage for the families,” explains Pearl. Sphe feels vindicated on Thursday 13 December when she visits Mazwi at home and he is attentive to her every need. “He is complimentary and loving and Sphe believes that they could forget about the past and start afresh,” adds the actress.

FOR BETTER OR WORSE

Smanga isn’t giving up though – he is a Moroka and nothing will stand in his way from his dream. For the moment, he fakes a smile on the outside, “But he is seething on the inside,” reveals Pearl. “There is nothing that he can do right now because Sphe has made her decision. If he continues being the man that he is, maybe Mazwi will mess up once again.”

While Sphe and Mazwi look like everything is back on track on Tuesday 18 December, Smanga is forced to look on from the sidelines. “He knows that there are lies and secrets even though they’re pretending that they are starting clean. No more backstabbing and betrayal. No more hidden agendas. They can do with their relationship what they please without the family’s interference,” explains the actress, who says that having a baby means that the elders and family have their Moroka heir and if Mazwi and Sphe can forget about the affair ordeal, then there is nothing stopping them from having a proper marriage. Nothing except for a certain brother-in-law…

Sphe is surprised by Mazwi’s kiss but she’s taking full advantage of him wanting to reconcile.
