Love or friendship? Lerato follows her heart

Lesedi (Luyanda Mzazi) is bemused on Thursday 3 January that her best friend Lerato (Candice Modiselle) is dating her ex Mpho (Junior Singo). She didn’t take Lerato seriously three days earlier on Monday 31 December when she revealed that they were an item, “Which is why Lesedi put on a fake smile,” says Candice. “She didn’t think that Lerato was being serious and just fobbed it off, like whatever.” Lesedi also didn’t think that Mpho would be playing musical beds with his bestie and so blatantly in her face, even though they have been broken up since 2017. Lesedi doesn’t want to seem like the jealous friend, so she reserves comment and hides her disappointment, explains Candice, but there is only so much sulking she can do before Lerato gets a clue on Thursday 10 January.

IN TWO MINDS

There’s no conflict of interest as far as Lerato is concerned. “She agreed to go out with Mpho because they have a genuine connection. It wasn’t from a point of malice,” adds the actress. But Lesedi thinks otherwise and she would rather see Lerato single and miserable than with Mpho. “Lesedi waits for him to leave [on Thursday 3 January] and she tells Lerato that Mpho can’t be trusted,” says Candice. Lesedi was the one who cheated in the relationship but she twists the story to work in her favour, adds the actress. “Lesedi paints him to be someone that he isn’t. She tells Lerato that he will hurt her at his first opportunity. While Lerato hears what Lesedi is saying, she also knows her friend and she knows Mpho. “It’s a bitter pill for Lerato to swallow,” says Candice, “being put in this situation. Lesedi is extremely self-absorbed, even at the expense of Lerato’s emotions – but she also dated Mpho, so what if she is telling the truth about him?”

CALLING IT QUITS

Not sure what to do on Thursday 10 January, Lerato does what she thinks is best for her: she dumps Mpho. “She wishes that she didn’t have to, but her friendship means more,” says Candice. While that makes Lesedi happy, it isn’t long before Lerato regrets her decision by Monday 14 January. “She misses him a lot. Their teenage love affair was cut short. He was her support system unlike Lesedi, who is making everything about her again and that upsets Lerato,” adds Candice. Girl Code rule #1: don’t date your bestie’s ex. Ever!
