Make no mistake, Corey Hawkins can handle a gun like an elite soldier thanks to training for his role as Army Ranger Eric Carter in single-season action show 24: Legacy (2017). But he is a lot more peaceful in real life, preferring to perform stage plays on Broadway in New York than having explosions going off all around him and having to dodge bullets from baddies.

He graduated from Washington’s 1 Duke Ellington School Of The Arts in 2006 and studied Theatre at famous New York performance school Juilliard, which almost never happened, explains the actor: “I walked in having prepared a monologue for two months. I got into position and blanked. You could hear a pin drop in that auditorium.” Corey is a rap music fan but even 2 he couldn’t believe that he was cast as Dr Dre in 2015 biopic Straight Outta Compton. The first person he told was his grandmother, who wasn’t impressed because of the gangster connotations. She came round after seeing the film though. His favourite acting work to date 3 was playing Tybalt in a 2013 theatre play of Romeo & Juliet because he got to work with Orlando Bloom as Romeo. His gran was also the person Corey 4 credits with getting him into performing. “She would take me to church and I was her tape recorder, listening to her sing. That stuck with me and singing turned into acting,” he says. Corey isn’t a social media fan and 5 has posted once on Instagram, an “I am a voter” video during the November 2018 mid-term vote in the US.
