Disaster written all over it

From crazy assassins, thieving lecturers and couple goals, we saw it all in 2018 on Skeem Saam.

Childhood friends Kwaito, Tbose and Katlego (Clement Maosa, Cornet Mamabolo and Patrick Seleka) were making moves in 2018. They not only graduated university, the young men also went into the workforce full steam. Viewers met the troublesome trio in 2011 wearing oversized school uniforms, constantly being sent to the principal’s office for talking back to their teachers or being caught with drugs. But they’ve grown to be responsible adults with good heads on their shoulders. That doesn’t mean that misfortune hasn’t followed them…

A TOTAL KNOCKOUT

Kwaito’s bad luck started in March when he discovered that his lecturer Mr Spiller (Jürgen Hellberg) stole his engineering project in the hopes of making a quick buck or two. Spiller had betrayed his naive, trusting student and there was no way that Kwaito could allow that to go unpunished. He tracked his lecturer to a golf course and attacked him in a moment of rage with a golf club, leaving the lecturer in hospital ICU. Spiller was strangled to death by a Turf Loop assassin named Alexos (Ter Hollman), who then framed Kwaito and tormented him for months until Alexos too was found murdered under mysterious circumstances.

TROUBLE KNOCKING

While Kwaito’s family were recovering from Alexos’s threats in September, his sister Sthoko’s (Innocent Sadiki) abusive husband Dennis (Clevy Sekgala) was released from prison on parole and their son Clement ( Vusi Leremi) snuck Dennis into the Seakamela house. And the youngster didn’t stop there – he tricked his family into letting Dennis move in permanently by threatening to leave with his father should they say no. The Seakamelas had no choice but to let Dennis stay in the guest room, but his presence drove Sthoko up the wall. Oblivious to the resentment sent his way, Dennis tried to kiss Sthoko later in September in the hopes of fixing their marriage. She pushed him away, he fell and Dennis was knocked unconscious after hitting his head. In a panic, Sthoko fled town, leaving her husband in a pool of blood (but alive), never to return – at least for 2018.

HEADMASTER DISASTER

Shady teacher Alfred (Putla Sehlapelo) might as well have signed his friend and boss Principal Thobakgale’s (Elizabeth Serunye) death sentence in July. He framed her for stealing funds from the school and she was fired by the Department Of Education in a storm of lies in July. Embarrassed and with Alfred replacing her as headmaster, Principal struggled to find a reason to live and locked herself away from the world until November when her daughter Elizabeth (Amanda Manku) returned for varsity holidays. She helped her mom stop abusing painkillers and get back on the right track fighting for her job – read more on p14.

NEW BEGINNINGS

Culinary student Katlego and his girlfriend business partner Candice (Liza van Deventer) launched the new-andimproved Capsy’s Restaurant in August but the road to success wasn’t easy. Constant fighting with their investor Lehasa (Cedric Fourie) about paying back their loan left a bitter taste in their mouths and a bigger dent in their pockets than they’d expected. At least they got off to a great start in realising their dreams by the end of the month when their business was the talk of the town for all the right reasons.

ROMANCE RUMBLES

Rachel (Lesego Marakalla) is happy now that she’s got a ring from her older lover Marothi (Macks Papo) but her family have been trying to talk her out of marrying him since November. He’s willing to overlook her dramaqueen behaviour and she just wants her cake and to eat it – paid for in full, upfront by her rich entrepreneur lover.

WHAT WE WANT IN 2019

We cannot wait for Alfred to get payback for cheating Principal out of her job – and that will be soon! As for the rest of the year, Rachel and Marothi need to get married in a glitzy affair with the obligatory interruption from someone objecting to their marriage… like an angry ex. And as much of a baddie as Lehasa is, he does deserve a little happiness in his life, whether it’s with current girlfriend Lelo (Amanda du-Pont) or someone else.
