There are many unanswered questions when action series NCIS: LA (2009- current) returns. Season 9 ended in October 2018 with the fates of Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen), Kensi (Daniela Ruah), Sam (LL Cool J) and Callen (Chris O’Donnell) sinking after the Mexican cartel blew up their escape vehicle. “It starts with a bang,” says executive producer Scott Gemmill. “We pick up minutes after season 9 ended and we’re hitting the ground running.”

What we know is that no one will escape this attack unscathed. “Injuries are fairly severe for a couple of them, especially for Deeks who is barely alive, so the ultimate outcome will take a number of episodes to resolve,” says Scott. “The unassigned Mexico mission is going to have an impact throughout the season and it will affect them for some time.” One agent not to survive is Hidoko (Andrea Bordeaux), whose burnt body is found inside the torched escape vehicle in episode 1. “This loss will hang heavy over the team,” says Scott, revealing that fan favourite Hetty Lange (Linda Hunt) will also be absent for most of the season. Linda was involved in a car accident and the writers decided to use the 73-year-old for voiceovers only so that she could recuperate for season 11.

Good news for Kensi and Deeks fans is that their calling off their engagement at the end of season 9 was only temporary. After receiving medical attention, Deeks admits that he was wrong and asks Kensi to marry him. The bad news is that wedding bells will only be ringing much later in the season, unless something else gets in the way.
