As each episode of the brand-new BBC War Of The Worlds (2019) sci-fi adaptation airs on M-Net in the first quarter [the January start date was pushed out in the UK], that episode plus the next episode will arrive on Showmax. Rafe Spall plays George, narrator of the tale, and Eleanor Tomlinson (Demelza in Poldark, 2015- current) is his partner Amy. Rupert Graves (DI Lestrade in Sherlock) is George’s brother Frederick and Robert Carlyle (Franco in Brit comedy movie Trainspotting, 1996) has been cast as scientist Ogilvy. The series keeps author HG Wells’ original Edwardian Era setting, which is a huge blessing for a tale of alien invasion and panic as it feels immediate and unpredictable. We know that nobody onscreen has spent time thinking about all those movie-and-TV based strategies for dealing with the horror of invasion. And nobody is flying an aeroplane into an alien ship or uploading a virus to solve the problem.
Local television lovers can also look forward to the uncensored comedy Roast of musician AKA that will be recorded at the live event on Thursday 21 February and airs on Showmax in March, one day after it airs on Comedy Central.
Eleanor and George are fleeing more than just aliens.
