If you can’t handle the fire, you’re in trouble because the 9-1-1 responders in action drama 9-1-1 (2018- current) have a lot on their plates in season 2. “We are changing gears this time,” explains series creator Brad Falchuk. “We built out the firehouse crew and their soap opera stories in season 1. Now we are expanding our 9-1-1 call centre group.” And that means a couple of new faces being added to the team. But first one needs to leave…

9-1-1 operator Abby Clark (Connie Britton) left town in season 1’s finale in September 2018 to find peace after her mom’s death, leaving her toyboy lover Buck (Oliver Stark) to live in her apartment while she’s in Europe. Buck’s sister Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt, Melinda in sci-fi Ghost Whisperer, 2005-2010) arrives in episode 1 and its clear that she’s fleeing trouble, explains Jen: “She was in an abusive marriage and is seeking refuge with her brother. She arrives pretty broken and wants to start over.” The former ER nurse doesn’t know quite where she fits yet, but someone who does have his spot sorted is Buck’s rival for hottest firefighter Eddie Diaz (Ryan Guzman, Carlos in sci-fi show Heroes Reborn, 2015-2016). He is a single dad whose son has cerebral palsy. He is trying to give his boy everything he never had but that’s a lot for him to carry on his shoulders alone.

As for the main crew, LAPD officer Athena (Angela Bassett) and fire chief Bobby (Peter Krause) make their new relationship official in episode 3 (5 Feb) and Peter teases “that there might be wedding bells down the line if they ever get time for themselves”.
