Romeo to the rescue!

Love-tortured Romeo is in a race against time to save Xolile before her murderous husband snaps.

-

Romeo (Hungani Ndlovu) is deeply in love with Xolile (Sivenathi Mabuya) and he’s grateful to have regained her trust, but with love comes fear. He knows that the husband in her bed Mthunzi (Bongile Mantsai) is prepared to kill even those close to him if they get in his way. “It’s terrifying because there’s no guarantee when he’ll turn around and do that,” says Hungani. “Romeo has true feelings for Xolile. The thing that frightens him most is that he knows exactly what type of person Mthunzi is,” adds the actor. “If she calls him, the first thing he asks is, ‘What’s going on?’ or ‘What’s wrong?’ He is on edge just waiting for something to happen.” Romeo wants Xolile to survive her marriage no matter what strategy she uses to do so – and boy, are we in for a surprise by her extreme actions. “It is the only option that she has to be safe until there is enough evidence to get rid of Mthunzi,” says Hungani.

WHO ARE YOU?

Romeo isn’t just afraid for Xolile’s life, he’s wrestling with the fact that she is in a sexual relationship with Mthunzi. “He’s jealous about it. It’s really evident that he is feeling those feelings,” says Hungani. It’s all fuel to his desire to get rid of his rival – and his failure to do so up until now has been pretty crushing. “Prior to this happening, he was a genius basically. He could commit a crime, cover it up, find out anything about anyone and he felt like he was untouchable. Having Mthunzi be a step ahead of him in the same game was a massive blow to his confidence.” So this fortnight, Romeo comes up with a plan to retrace Mthunzi’s footsteps to truly get to know him. “With Mthunzi, he just has the pieces of the puzzle that he has been given. And they just don’t match up. From his side, there needs to be more curiosity about this shady guy,” explains Hungani.

GROWING UP

Love, hard work, honesty? Lil’Romeo is growing up in 2019! “It’s challenging because he isn’t necessarily the same Romeo that we’ve known. It’s really testing him now that he’s trying to do the honest thing as much as possible. It’s a more honest version of him, more in touch with his feelings. Prior to now, I felt like despite all those different situations that happened, he remained the same person. Right now is the time for myself as an actor to see how I can visually show the audience how he has grown. I’m enjoying it,” says Hungani.
