Australian food stylist and home chef extraordinare Donna Hay is making it easy to look flash in the kitchen. Her eight- episode series Basics To Brilliance (2016) was a passion project, explains the 49-year-old: “Food must always be about taste but that doesn’t mean you need to have a million ingredients in the bowl. Sometimes the basics really are just brilliant.” What ingredients have made Donna such a successful food and TV pro? Let’s peek…

She knows just about every recipe you can think of. She’s written 26 cookbooks (most have won awards and prizes) and sold over 10 million copies. They’ve also been translated into ten languages, which Donna says “is bang on [great] that people in other countries are enjoying my food”.

Donna has been cooking for over 40 years and got her first lesson in the kitchen from her mom when she was eight. She’s been styling food for adverts and photoshoots since she was 19, and at 25 she was food editor at Marie Claire Australia magazine.

The foodie had her own magazine – Donna Hay – that was published from 2001 to 2018 and was also printed in 82 other countries. She closed it to continue her other work on TV.

Just because she loves the kitchen doesn’t mean that she’s a boring homebody – on Boxing Day in 2016 she sailed the 25m-long racing yacht Beau Geste in the Sydney To Hobart race. And yes, she doubled as the chef too. While Donna doesn’t specialise in one style of cooking, she has a favourite when it comes to eating: “Cake! Give me cake!” she says.
