There’s no shortage of drama on medical series Grey’s Anatomy (2005-now), especially because the doctor characters have such different personal lives when they’re not in scrubs. Season 15 (2018) doesn’t disappoint as it introduces Doctor Nico Kim (newcomer Alex Landi) to the mix and he has an instant impact, explains Alex. “Nico is openly gay and that is still somewhat of a stigma in this day and age. He’s going into this tightknit community of doctors who won’t all be as open to his arrival.”

Nico moving in at Grey Sloan Memorial is something of a culture shock to the resident docs, which mirrored Alex’s casting experience. “I sent my audition tape and a week later I was here in LA for wardrobe and rehearsals. It was an overnight thing and Nico is in a similar position. He wasn’t expecting to be thrown in the deep-end and he must tread water before he can settle.”

There’s an awkward intro for Nico to at least one new colleague, adds Alex, who is half-Italian, half-Korean. “He’s in surgery and winks at his new crush. But the guy doesn’t know that Nico is gay yet because he has just arrived, so it leads to an awkward moment or two until they both get on the same page,” says the actor. But while orthopaedic surgeon Nico is comfortable with his professional life, he’s still battling a few demons of his sexual orientation, like his family. “They are intensely critical of him as a surgeon, which he is extremely good at, so he hasn’t come out to them. If they’re so hard on him for work, imagine if they find out that he doesn’t fit their idea of ‘normal’,” says Alex. In the meantime, there are lives to save and doctors to flirt with.
