Ex- CIA counter-terrorism agent Carrie Matheson (Claire Danes, Angela in My So- called Life, 1994-1995) has endured more in all the seasons of Homeland (2011-now) than most go through in a lifetime. And for the final season, she’s starting in a position she knows well: as a prisoner of war. In season 1, she was (rightly) convinced that US Marine Nicholas Brody (Damien Lewis, Bobby in Billions, 2016-now, Tuesdays on M-Net) had been turned into a terrorist during his captivity, and now it’s her turn, explains Claire. “Carrie has been held in Russia for months without her medication (for bipolar disorder). Her memory is patchy and post-traumatic stress isn’t helping.”

“Carrie is the one whose patriotism is being called into question,” says showrunner Alex Gansa. “Carrie is accused of having been turned when she returns to the US.” It’s a change that excited Claire when she got the script, explaining that “I loved the idea that Carrie is positioned as this suspected traitor – a Brody. That’s such a perfect parallel and fun to play. She’s struggling and doesn’t know how to narrate her own story.”

As with the previous seasons, Carrie is going to be tangled in a web of danger as she returns to Afghanistan to put her knowledge and instincts to good use. Her ex boss and confidante Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin, Gideon in Criminal Minds, 2005-2020) is the US President’s security advisor “but he needs Carrie’s skillset. Their story has been constant through eight seasons,” says Alex. “We really get to bring that story to a close by giving them the work and personal challenges they need.”
