Melody (Kim Bowers) was demanding far more than she realised by asking retired international jazz star Aunty Florrie (Celeste Williams) to be her music teacher in drama series Melody (2020). She was asking Florrie to confront her own musical past that she’d rather forget with her ex bandmates, Melody’s dad Eric (Abduragman Adams) and gangster Jack (Moeniel Jacobs). Since the lessons started, everyone’s has given Florrie attitude.

“Florrie ran (overseas) as she wanted to be as far away from these people as possible. Now she has to face those emotions she didn’t want to face headon,” says Celeste. Helping Melody also means standing up to judgment. “They see her as little Miss Goody Two Shoes. ‘You’ve graced us with your presence,’ and that thing because ‘she’s travelled, don’t you know?’” Celeste laughs.

What certain people don’t understand is that helping Melody chase her dream isn’t about helping Melody to reject her roots out of snobbery. “She wants Melody to be successful because Auntie Florrie sees Melody’s dream as the way for Melody to just blossom and be every-thing that she can be,” reveals Celeste. In careworn, alcoholic Eric and fabulous Florrie, we see the contrast between chasing dreams and giving up. “Because Florrie is an artist, a creative person, she didn’t age,” says Celeste. “There’s always been youthfulness in her.” And hopefully Florrie can pass that on to Melody.
