In the Cape Flats-set drama Melody (2020), lead character Melody (Kim Bowers) has two angels on her shoulder – her music teacher Auntie Florrie (Celeste Williams) and her kind-hearted busking partner Bevan (Riedwaan Damon). Florrie is a classically trained artist who travelled the world, while local muso Bevan plays from the heart and soul. They represent different paths for Melody: embracing home but possibly being stuck in it, and leaving with the danger of becoming rootless. “Bevan is Melody’s backbone, while she is his inspiration,” says Athlone resident Riedwaan. “He feels compelled to help Melody all the time.”
The role gives Riedwaan the chance to express another side as a performer. “I love music,” he says. “I’m not a fulltime musician but I do play the guitar, which was very helpful in dipping into the character, whose guitar is attached to his hip. It’s his persona!” Riedwaan had to let Bevan’s soul speak through his music. “They let me come with my own style of playing so that I could bring the character to life with that,” he says. “When they gave me music, it wasn’t really music that was played on the guitar. I had to figure out how to play it but still zone into the character to show his passion.”
Rehearsing with Kim helped Riedwaan shape their characters’ relationship, with Riedwaan on guitar and Kim on pennywhistle. “The pennywhistle is on a B Flat, a different key than the guitar so we went through a bunch notes to figure it out,” adds the actor.
