Neil Morrissey admits that being asked to join a police action series was the last thing he thought he’d do. “When the producers of Line Of Duty (2012-now) called my agent, I genuinely thought it was a joke. I don’t have the face for serious roles. I’m the goofball in the back being clumsy. But the script hit me like a ton of bricks. There was just no way I’d let this go past without at least trying.” And it worked – his role as Detective Constable Morton was extended until the end of season 3.

Neil’s face isn’t new to SABC3 viewers – his comedy series Men Behaving Badly (1992-2014) aired on the free-to-air channel in the late ’90s. He played buffoon Tony, who lives with loser Gary ( Martin Clunes, Dr Martin Ellingham in crime drama Doc Martin, 2004-now). While DC Morton is a lawman, Neil is no stranger to the wrong side of the law. “I used to get caned almost daily. I was somewhat feral. I couldn’t shut my gob and always mouthed off at school,” says the 57-year- old.

Neil is a singer (mostly for stage plays, not recording music) and he has provided the voice of Bob in kiddies animated show Bob The Builder (19982011), as well as other minor characters like Roley and Farmer Pickles.

The performer’s love life is stable now – he’s been dating non- celeb Emma Killick for years. But his previous romances were filled with drama. “The press made me out as a love rat, they had private investigators follow me, my phone was hacked. Many relationships were ruined by that,” he says.
