Telenovelas are filled with over-thetop drama and in Mexican series Tanto Amor (2015-2016), that’s thanks almost entirely to antagonist Bruno Lombardo. He’s played by Arap Bethke and there’s nothing too dastardly for the character, who Arap empathises with. “He isn’t all bad. He just does some questionable things. Bruno is a nice guy, he’s just misunderstood,” says the actor, joking that the whole “Bruno is a murderer” plot shouldn’t be used to judge him.

The 40-year- old’s full name is Ricardo Arap Bethke Galdames and the “Arap Bethke” part of his name means “Bethke’s son”. He was born in Kenya to German United Nations worker Claus Bethke and his Chilean wife Patricia Galdames.

Arap’s family moved to Mexico when he was five and while he’s a citizen now, he calls himself a “Mexikenyan” and he visits Kenya every year. He’s got an ear for languages and is fluent in Spanish, English, French and Italian. He earned his communication degree in 2004 from Mexico’s Universidad Iberoamericana.

Arap keeps his private life under wraps and while his relationship status is unknown, he has a five-yearold daughter Paloma from his 2014 romance with Isabela Córdoba (Silvia in Decisions: Some Win, Others Lose, 2020). He is a human rights activist and regularly travels to the US to help Mexican families in shelters. “It’s important that they know someone cares while they wait months for the US government to help them,” says Arap.
