Words & Numbers

-

Season 9 SABC2 (*192) 16:00 Gameshow

As the host of youth gameshow Words & Numbers (2005-now), Denver Vraagom (Preston in drama series Erfsondes, 2012-2017) keeps contestants on their toes. In each episode, competitors take part in a series of literacy and numeracy challenges, and by season end, the last boy or girl standing wins a cash prize and the Words & Numbers trophy. “The kids are tested on their strengths,” says Denver. “What’s more interesting is that the audience, from all ages, play along. The elderly at nursing homes join in on the fun too. It’s an exhilarating interactive quiz show,” says the 48-year-old.

What were your expectations when you joined the show? I’ve been hosting

Words & Numbers since its inception in 2005. Back then, it was called Wise Up [from 2005-2014]. I knew it was going to be an exciting project as I’ve always wanted to work with Johan Stemmet, who is the producer (and from 1991 to 2019 he hosted music gameshow Noot Vir Noot, 1991-now). We have a winning show that educates and entertains.

If the tables were turned, how would you do on the quizshow? Fairly well, but not as good as the contestants. Often the kids respond before I’m done asking the question. I like to refer to them as “diamonds in the rough”.

Is filming a gameshow like filming a series? It’s busy! We record four to six episodes a day, but the amazing team make the work worth it with their support. I love all the facets of my lovely industry. With acting and directing, I get to lift an idea off the paper. With presenting, I get to give a little more of myself.
