The Third Day

-

Season 1 M-Net (*101) 22:30 Drama

Osea Island, off the coast of southeast England, is a mysterious place in drama limited series The Third Day (2020). The cellphone reception is horrible and the people keep to themselves. It’s also where Sam (Jude Law, Lenny Belardo in drama series The New Pope, 2019-2020) finds trouble. “He is grieving the loss of his young son (offscreen). But while he’s there, Sam rescues a girl named Epona (Jessie Ross, Alice Evans in 2015 horror series The Frankenstein Chronicles) from suicide and takes her to her family,” says the actor.

The more Sam wants to leave, the more he’s “politely forced” to stay, adds Jude, whose character isn’t the nice guy he seems. “Sam is in a hurry to deliver a bribe to a man back on the mainland, but these people keep finding reasons, very compelling reasons, for him to remain.” If Sam realised that his nightmares were about to become real, he would flee. Historian Jess (Katherine Waterston, Tina Goldstein in the Fantastic Beasts fantasy film franchise, 2016-now) reveals the traditions of the people on Osea Island and their blind faith to maintaining them at all costs – including human sacrifice and gruesome bonfires.

Sam becomes wrapped up in the islanders and their ways, and he doesn’t realise that he’s been there for almost a year, explains Jude, which is a problem for his wife. “Helen (Naomie Harris, Eve Moneypenny in 2015 Bond movie Spectre) searches for Sam and it gets bloody. It’s psychologically tense,” warns Jude. NB! See p5.
