Bad voodoo

KK pays a high price for disobeying the dark forces of the Amaboys spirits.

-

Power-hungry and ruthless businessman KK Mulaudzi (Macdonald Ndou) made a pact with the devil back in late 2020 and he’s now living to regret that decision. “He made a deal with the evil Amaboys spirits, that they would give him all the power and the wealth that he could dream of. But there were certain conditions that came with their help. The first was to obey their rules. Second, the Amaboys demanded blood sacrifices – something that KK hasn’t been able to perform yet,” says Macdonald.

The Amaboys are furious that KK has disobeyed them and they’ve punished him since mid January, toying with his sanity and making him appear crazy. They sent him to work, as the boss, wearing nothing but his undies, which he was completely oblivious to. And they’ve driven a wedge between KK and his sons Kgosi (Tebatso Mashishi) and Mudi (Thabelo Makakavhule).

“KK is desperate to cut the ties with the Amaboys and take away their power over him, but that is proving to be near impossible. Evil sangoma

Master (Kamogelo Letsosa, Felicia from 2017 to 2018 in soapie The Queen, 2016now, see p37) warns KK there will be dire consequences should he do so, but he doesn’t want to listen and he continues to anger them with his disobedience,” adds Macdonald.

In a desperate attempt to cleanse his house from the Amaboys, KK gathers up their artefacts and buries them in the veld. But the wrath of the Amaboys is harsh and their vengeance is cruel: KK’s son Mudi is killed in a helicopter crash. “This is KK’s punishment for what he has done, ignoring warnings,” admits Macdonald, “and he has no idea how to deal with it. He just want to run away and forget that he ever got involved with the Amaboys.”

THE BLAME

Kgosi doesn’t mince his words when it comes to who is to blame for the death of his bother Mudi, says Tebatso. “It’s their father’s fault as he got mixed up with the Amaboys to begin with. KK did this, he is to blame.” Kgosi found

out about the Amaboys in December 2020 and he has repeatedly warned his dad to stop listening to them. “There was this black aura over their house and Kgosi could feel it. It became a place of misery with a bad vibe, and Kgosi and his father were constantly at each other’s throats. They were fighting a lot and Kgosi and Mudi eventually moved out to go stay with family friend Hangwani (Constance Sibiya) who has been caring for them.”

Away from KK and the Amaboys, Kgosi was able to find peace and Mudi was also smiling for a change. But that has gone now that the Amaboys have murdered Mudi – and KK doesn’t realise that he’s fulfilled his blood sacrifice. “KK missed his sons and offered them a sightseeing helicopter ride to try convince them that he is a better dad now, in the hopes that they’d come home,” explains Macdonald, but Kgosi turned down the offer and Mudi went alone, unknowingly to his death.

MISSING IN ACTION

A distraught Kgosi seeks out his father and plans to confront KK for murdering his own son. But when Kgosi arrives at KK’s house, his dad is missing. “The house is eerily quiet. All of KK’s stuff are still in the house, but his dad isn’t there. Kgosi also notices that his dad’s car is missing,” says Tebatso. Fearing the

worst, that the Amaboys might have gotten to his dad for disobeying them, Kgosi contacts family and friends trying to find KK, but worryingly nobody has seen or heard from him. “Kgosi goes as far as hiring private investigators to help him find his dad. And it’s not good news.”

After a few days, the private investigators report back to Kgosi that they have found the burnt-out wreckage of KK’s car. “Kgosi is convinced that there are only two possibilities and both are plausible: KK is dead or on the run,” explains Tebatso. There’s no body, so the latter is more likely and Kgosi offers a cash reward to anyone who can supply information of his dad’s whereabouts. “Ominously, no one comes forward,” adds the actor.

“B” IS FOR BURDEN

While dealing with his missing father, Kgosi must also arrange Mudi’s funeral on his own. “This is the hardest thing he’s ever had to arrange, something Kgosi never thought he’d do. They had bonded so much over the last year, so it’s especially heart-breaking for Kgosi to have to select a coffin and arrange flowers and write the eulogy. He has to say goodbye to his brother and their dad isn’t there to help him,” explains Tebatso. Overwhelmed, Kgosi resorts to his only coping mechanism: becoming introverted once more, shutting off everything and everyone. “He’s mourning two losses: getting ready to bury his brother, and not knowing where his father is, if KK is even alive. Kgosi’s emotions are gnawing away at him and he is a wreck,” admits Tebatso.

SINS OF THE FATHER

Thathe’s most important people attend the funeral, including the royal family even though they and KK are bitter business enemies. It’s a sad sight seeing Kgosi sitting alone in the pew, trying to control his emotions as the tears roll down his face. But the peace is about to descend into chaos when a raging KK storms in.

“He tries to stop the funeral as he doesn’t want to accept the fact that his youngest son is dead,” says Macdonald. “His mind is also playing tricks on him

and he hallucinates seeing his dead son standing next to the coffin. Mudi tells KK to confess to his sins. Breaking down in tears, KK tells Mudi what he’s done, his past sins, people he cheated and defrauded, all of the shady business dealings he has been involved with and how he got mixed up with the Amaboys spirits.”

There’s a shocked hush as the church tries to make sense of what has been confessed by KK. They think that he’s lost his mind – he’s ranting and rambling to his son’s coffin. Poor Kgosi is gobsmacked at the podium. “He never though in his wildest dreams that his father would hang up his dirty laundry is such a public way,” says Tebatso. “It’s actually scary to witness as this powerful man is now a weeping ball of emotion, completely crushed. Physically, he is broken too – his power suits and clean appearance has been swapped for dirty clothes. He looks like a hobo, a drunk who wakes up on the pavement.” KK is quietly ushered out before he can cause any more distraction, allowing Kgosi to continue the service for his late brother.

A HEALING PROCESS

Later that day, Kgosi checks in on his dad and they have “an honest discussion for the first time in years. They both know they need to make peace. They know that they need to clean the festering wound between them, but it’s not going to happen overnight. It will take time,” admits Tebatso.

As for the Amaboys, they might be gone now but not forgotten, warns Macdonald. “They will never go away. It’s only a matter of time before they rear their ugly heads again.” And not that KK’s sins are out in the open, his enemies are circling like sharks…
