Dead wrong

Nkululeko is punished by the ancestors for a keeping a dark secret from everyone.

-

Lies have a way of seeping through the cracks of reality to bite you in the butt – a lesson that Nkululeko (Nkanyiso Mchunu) learns the hard way – and it might cost him his sanity. His mom Thokozile (Nqobile Sipamla) was “accidentally” killed by her friend KaMadonsela (Brenda Mhlongo) during a shoving match in January over Thoko’s involvement in the assassination of Bhengu patriarch Ngcolosi (Tony Kgoroge) in August last year.

A body was found that may have been Thokozile’s and Nkululeko made a false identification, knowing that his mom is still alive and well, on the run from the law. “He identified the Jane Doe as Thoko to protect his fugitive mom. The woman was cremated and Nkulu placed ‘his mom’s’ ashes in a memorial wall with a plaque identifying it as Thokozile.

But when Nkulu visits the ashes with family, strange things start to happen to him,” says Nkanyiso. Scary things…

DEATH BY FIRE

Standing before the memorial wall, Nkululeko feels a dark hand gripping him. “It’s hard to explain, it’s like he is being choked. He also sees a woman on fire next to the plaque screaming in pain. It’s the Jane Doe, pleading for help,” says Nkanyiso. Distraught, Nkulu rushes home and locks himself in his room, which causes his confused fiancée Fikile (Phindile Gwala) to panic. “The only thing that Nkululeko keeps repeating is: ‘Stay away from me’,” says Nkanyiso.

The Jane Doe invades Nkululeko’s dreams too, and he believes that the ancestors are punishing him. “It gets so bad that during one of his nightmares, Fikile tries to wake up Nkululeko, but he is startled and tries to strangle her. It’s only after Fikile screams that Nkulu wakes up and stops. He is a danger not only to himself, but those he loves.”

LOCAL HELP

Not knowing what to do, Nkululeko reaches out to KaMadonsela and tells her the truth. Concerned, she insists that he visit a sangoma to rid himself of the Jane Doe ghost and appease the ancestors. “A cleansing ceremony is held, but things go wrong. He hallucinates and Jane Doe tells him that she’ll never let go,” says Nkanyiso.

Desperate, Nkululeko takes the ashes from “Thoko’s” resting place and scatter them where Jane Doe will be free of Nkulu’s lies. Nkulu’s ghostly nightmares stop almost immediately, “But for how long?” explains Nkanyiso. Because Thokozile is still on the run and her son is still lying to the ancestors…
