Special Assignment
Season 31 SABC3 (*193) 20:30 Reality
From uncovering crime, to discussing social and political ills, current affairs show Special Assignment (1998-now) is dedicated to exposing and confronting matters that affect the country. “As the only English-medium investigative series on the public service broadcaster, our job is imperative,” says senior producer Busisiwe Ntuli. “Special Assignment is central to upholding the democracy of South Africa through revealing the truth to viewers who’d not have access to satellite television. We strive to reveal untold stories, hold offenders accountable, and provide a full picture of the story,” adds the producer.
Over the two decades that Special Assignment has aired, it has evolved from including a studio discussion, to a range of hosts like radio personality Ashraf Garda (in 2011-2013). Now, the investigative show consists of 30-minute episodes that feature participants and experts who discuss the weekly topic. “We’ve discussed including a presenter again and we always come to the same conclusion: that a host has nothing to do with the content we produce, but have more to do with imaging and marketing,” explains Busi. “Special Assignment is driven by compelling visuals. Without a host, episodes continue to resonate.”
While there are countless stand-out moments for Busi, her highlight was exposing Pastor Timothy Omotoso for sexual crimes against young women in 2017 that led to his arrest. “We had investigated the story for months and his arrest brought hope and justice for the complainants who had allegedly been abused for years,” says Busi.
