Ashley Jensen returns tonight with her bright blonde bubbly PR agent-turnedsleuth in dramedy series Agatha Raisin (2014-now) and Agatha is raring to go – even if her community isn’t. “She has opened her own private detective agency in her sleepy little village of Carsley but no one is knocking on her door with crimes to solve,” says Ashley, who starred as Christina McKinney in comedy series Ugly Betty (2006-2010). The lack of work isn’t getting Agatha down though – she’s on the prowl!

“It’s so sweet how naive she is but at the same time she’s clued up, like in episode 3 when she discovers that her reputation has been tarnished in the papers and she goes on a PR offensive,” adds the actress. “Agatha fell into this sleuthing work and she’s finally finding herself.” Ashley adds that season 3 is “a fun mix of a number of the novels by Marion Chesney (author of the Hamish Macbeth novels, 1985-2020). Marion’s final Agatha novel was published last year, a year after she had passed away. There are 30 books in the series, so we have a lot of content.”

It’s not just Agatha’s work life that keeps her busy – while she is investigating a haunted house in episode 1, her onoff fiancé James (Jamie Glover, Angus in medical drama Holby City, 1999-now) is “helping”. He has supported her with work, but this season they’re going to have the lines blurred a little. “There’s still a lot of love. Agatha focusses on work because she is reminded of the love they had… but the more they work together on cases, the more they realise they’re still in love,” hints Ashley.
