Season 1 e.tv (*194) 20:30 Action

The reboot action series Magnum P.I. (2018-now) is very different from the original show that ran from 1980-1988 and that’s what they were aiming for, says lead actor Jay Hernandez, who’s taken over the private investigator role made famous by Tom Selleck (Police Commissioner Frank Reagan in drama series Blue Bloods, 2010-now). “We’ve never tried to be the original. There are similarities… Hawaii, characters and the Ferrari car, but we are telling our own stories,” adds Jay. What do the shows have in common? A lot…

1 The original version was filmed at the Anderson Estate on the island of Oahu Waimanalo, Hawaii, while the reboot is filmed at Kalaeloa Ranch just 49km away on Oahu. The buildings on Anderson Estate were demolished in 2015 by the new owner.

2 Magnum’s red Hawaiian shirts in the reboot are made by the same company that made the original. It’s from Pacific Clothing’s label Paradise Found, the design is called Jungle Bird. The production teams both have a 95% local crew policy, with the 5% being the main actors and the rest all being from the Hawaiian islands.

3 Neither versions of Magnum were allowed to drive the iconic Ferrari 308 GTS car faster than 40km/h. Tom was banned after wrecking two cars, while the reboot couldn’t afford insurance if Jay crashed one.

4 They both crossed over into sister shows Hawaii Five-O (1968-1980) and Hawaii Five-0 (2010-2020).

6 And Tom and Jay are both secretly dog lovers despite their characters not liking pooches Apollo and Zeus.
