Crowning glory

The opportunity of a lifetime comes Koloi’s way and he’s eager to grab it – but life has other plans.

-

The annual Miss Capricorn pageant is around the corner, and to keep things interesting, the organisers are hosting a career-making design competition. Tasked with designing the crown, creatives from all over Turfloop are clamouring to enter – and among them is jewellery design student Koloi (Joseph Senatle). According to Joseph, “This could change Koloi’s life.”

HAIL QUEEN KELE

But for Koloi, this isn’t just any crown. He wants to use this opportunity to honour Turf’s most famous Miss Capricorn: Kelebogile Kgomo (Mmathema Kgomo). Murdered in October 2019 by her obsessive follower Tumishang (Mothusi Magano), she was the reigning queen at the time of her death. “Koloi has an idea to design the crown as a tribute. This crown is meant to celebrate Kele and the life she barely had a chance to live. He even names it the Kele Crown,” reveals Joseph.

Unfortunately, the road to fame isn’t easy, and for Koloi, every obstacle imaginable will be thrown his way. Joseph says that most of the challenges are Koloi’s own doing, but there are a few curveballs that not even the most skilled designer could prepare for. “He gets delayed submitting his application and when he finally makes it, his submission is late,” explains the actor. But that’s not where the drama ends. “His design gets deleted the morning before his presentation in front of the judges!”

UPS AND DOWNS

With the universe seemingly against him, Koloi sinks into a depression and doubts whether he has what it takes for this cut-throat industry. “Him thinking that he’s already lost the competition affects him and he’s under the impression that people like him could never win things like this,” adds Joseph. “As a poor black child from the township, it’s already more difficult to achieve his dreams compared to his more affluent counterparts. And trying to win anything is an everyday struggle. He really had high hopes to win and prove that as long as you desire it and work hard, you can achieve it. But now that light is looking dim.”

Thankfully, Koloi isn’t alone and, realising that his friend is giving up on his dreams, Clement (Vusi Leremi) gives Koloi a much-needed boost. While Clement’s words of encouragement seem to do the trick, Joseph hints that there’s something bigger coming Koloi’s way that could change his life forever! The actor won’t go into too much detail, but hints that an unexpected phone call will leave Koloi beaming and ready to grasp his dreams.
