THE ANTI-HERO

-

Seems like Lelethu plays both for the good guys and bad guys. What’s his deal? That’s the great thing with this character! I also sometimes just go: Man, is he really bad? Or is he really good? And I think it’s that duality of Lelethu’s nature that resonates with something we all have inside ourselves. We all like to be good people, but there are bad parts to us too. I think he’s just so transparent regarding this duality and he embraces both sides. I think he tells himself that the end justifies the means, even if he does bad. Innately, he thinks himself to be a good person. I would probably describe him as an anti-hero, a rogue journalist.

Clearly he’s a bit of a rule-breaker, then. It’s more that he feels the rules of society are sometimes not enough to do good. Sometimes, he just feels like the rules are just a long way around and there’s always a quicker way to get to the truth. There’s always a shortcut to catch criminals redhanded. For him, it’s a case of “what are ethics?” Why can’t he be part of a gang while chasing a story? Why can’t he have a hidden camera and entrap people and lie his way through doors? Because it’s unethical? For him it’s a question of what matters more: Ethics or the truth. It’s clear that Detective Pele (Andile Nebulane) doesn’t like Lelethu. Why is that? Detective Pele wonders whether they could’ve met in the past. Has Lelethu somehow interfered with a

past investigation? Does the detective know him from somewhere? Is Lelethu a possible criminal informant that Pele has used and Lelethu maybe doublecrossed him? I think it’s going to be an interesting reveal. We might find out that Lelethu is more seedy than we might have thought. Maybe he’s covered up some evidence or done something worse…

We’ll also see Lelethu work closely with Dr Sphe (Pearl Monama) – that should make for an interesting dynamic! Yes! Sphe is so by the book. It creates such an interesting mixture where one person (Sphe) is rigid and the other (Lelethu) is just off the cuff and improvises his way through life. It becomes almost this yin-yang thing. The most fascinating thing is how you’ll see a different side to Sphe. They both just want to do good – Sphe wants to heal people, and Lelethu wants to heal society.

So whose toes will Lelethu be stepping on?

One of his pet peeves is people getting away with everything, those who have the money to get away with crimes. There’s a little hint for you… He’s not very big on corporates and people who are corrupt and manipulate people and take advantage of those who are less fortunate. He’ll track cops, politicians, doctors, journalists, media houses… These are the kind of people he’ll be messing with and he’s going to be thorn in a lot of people’s sides.
