Blue Bloods
Season 11 M-Net (*101) 20:30 Drama
Sunday dinners at the Reagan household are about to get a whole lot more interesting on police drama series Blue Bloods now that Detective Joe Hill (Will Hochman) has officially been revealed as a Reagan. Being the son of Police Commissioner Frank Reagan’s (Tom Selleck) late second-eldest son (not on-screen), who he was named after, there are similarities between Joe and his dad, and Frank is feeling protective over his new-found grandson.
Frank’s desire to keep Joe safe is evident later in the season when Joe, who is working undercover in an illegal firearms crew, is outed as a cop and he’s forced to go on the run from his new friends. If you remember in the pilot episode in 2010, this is exactly how we were told Joe’s dad died. Joseph Senior was a former-NYPD detective working undercover with the FBI, investigating a group of corrupt NYPD cops known as the Blue Templar. He was murdered by the group when he got close to naming them publicly and it’s haunted Frank ever since.
According to showrunner Kevin Wade, the fate of Joseph Junior was originally going to be the same as his dead dad, but the producers changed their minds mid-season. “We became very fond of both the character and the actor. We opted to give Joe a fuller story and to have him take his rightful place at the family table,” says Kevin. “We considered it (killing him off) for a second and then came to our senses. The finale this season does echo the finale of our very first season, but we just wanted to tell a great story and have the Reagans pull him out.” How Joe’s arrival will impact the rest of the Reagan kids is yet to be seen, but not everyone is happy with him there…
