Last year was a rough one, but Sphe Cele (Pearl Monama) had an especially difficult 2021 and she’s all too happy to close the door on it. “2021 was heavy,” says Pearl. “Sphe divorced Mazwi Moroka (Musa Ngema), moved out of the Moroka home, lost her father Jack (Vusi Kunene) and got into a relationship with Siyanda (Kay Sibiya), only to mourn his death weeks later.”

The new year’s already off to a bad start as Zulu princess Sphe’s uncle Nkosiyabo (Muzi Mthabela), who dropped in mid December, tells her that the royal family is in financial trouble. “Since her divorce, the alliance between the Morokas and Celes has all but collapsed,” explains Pearl. “In fact, the Celes may lose their land in KZN!” While the news is devastating, Sphe is flattered by the idea that her family is including her in their dealings for the first time. “In the past, these things were never discussed with her. But now her uncle says that they must work together for the sake of the Cele family’s future,” elaborates Pearl.

Sphe will have to make a few hard decisions in the process. Could we see a meaner, darker Sphe? “Not necessarily darker, but definitely stronger,” says Pearl of Sphe’s evolution. “Fans will see her take on a new identity as the family leader. She’s no longer the Morokas’ obedient makoti. Sphe is a leader who’ll do what’s necessary to save her family’s legacy – but she’s not yet comfortable with this new role.” She’d better hurry up though – time is ticking for the Celes… NB!
